What WhyLabs does

WhyLabs was a Seattle-based AI observability company, spun out of the Allen Institute for AI in 2019 and backed by investors including the AI Fund, Madrona, and Jeff Bezos, that built a platform for monitoring the health of data pipelines and machine learning and generative-AI models. Its approach centered on privacy-preserving telemetry: the open-source whylogs library generates lightweight statistical "profiles" of data rather than shipping raw records, enabling drift, data-quality, and model-performance monitoring at scale without exposing sensitive information. The company later added LangKit for large language model monitoring and security, plus an AI Control Center spanning predictive and generative use cases. WhyLabs was acquired by Apple in a low-profile deal dated January 2025; its founding team, led by CEO Alessya Visnjic, joined Apple, and the commercial WhyLabs service was wound down. Before closing, the team open-sourced its platform so the community could continue AI-observability research. As of mid-2026 WhyLabs is no longer an independent, commercially operating vendor - its lasting footprint is the open-source whylogs and LangKit projects rather than a supported product.
