Bifrost is an open-source, enterprise-grade AI gateway built by Maxim AI that unifies routing, governance, guardrails, and observability for LLM, MCP, and agent traffic behind a single control plane. It presents an OpenAI-compatible interface to more than 1,000 models across providers, adds adaptive load balancing, failover, and cluster mode, and claims very low overhead (roughly 11 microseconds per request at sustained 5,000 RPS in the company's benchmarks). For guardrails, Bifrost consolidates policy enforcement at the gateway layer so a single configuration validates every prompt and response inline: a guardrail can block a request, rewrite/redact content, or log and pass it through. It ships native Secrets Detection (Gitleaks-backed) and Custom Regex guardrails including a PII template, and integrates third-party guardrail providers such as AWS Bedrock Guardrails, Azure AI Content Safety, Google Model Armor, CrowdStrike AIDR, Gray Swan Cygnal, and Patronus AI behind one interface. Bifrost is part of Maxim AI's broader evaluation and observability stack. Maxim was founded in 2023 by Vaibhavi Gangwar and Akshay Deo, is based in San Francisco with operations in India, and raised a $3M seed round led by Elevation Capital.
