What Microsoft Purview (AI Governance) does

Microsoft Purview approaches AI governance primarily through the lens of data security, compliance and risk management for AI applications, with a particular focus on Microsoft 365 Copilot, agents built in Copilot Studio and third-party AI apps. Rather than a model-registry-first tool, Purview treats governance as protecting and monitoring the data flowing into and out of AI. Its Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) for AI provides a central place to see which sensitive data is being accessed by AI, monitor AI activity across Copilot and other apps, and enforce policies that minimize AI-related data risk. The Purview AI Hub offers a central workspace for monitoring, governing and securing AI usage, while Compliance Manager supplies regulatory templates to assess and strengthen compliance for generative AI. Sensitivity labels travel with AI interactions so classifications such as Confidential remain enforceable, and AI-aware data loss prevention prevents sensitive content from leaving trust boundaries through AI. Recent additions include specialized triage and data-security agents. It is aimed at security, compliance and privacy teams in Microsoft-centric enterprises; its distinctiveness is deep native enforcement inside Microsoft 365, Entra and Azure rather than broad multi-vendor model risk assessment.
